Democracy in Europe

Thanks for visiting this Blog. I think it will start off slowly but get busier and I hope that the debate here is useful.

May I start off by saying that I am a candidate in the European Elections in the North West. How did this happen?

Last year I followed Libertas on the internet as they campaigned for a 'No' vote in Ireland on the Lisbon Treaty. The 'No' vote won and after that I signed up to the Libertas Newsletter and kept an eye on the Party.

I got regular updates which I found interesting and a few months ago learnt that Libertas was looking for candidates for the European Elections. I thought - What a unique opportunity. So I applied and here I am.

Why would someone like me want to run as an MEP?

The reason is that I have become very disallusioned with politics and the way that I feel that politicians are ignoring their constituents. I believe that they have acted in a very non-democratic way and instead of 'serving' their constituents they have been complicit in forging ahead with something that they feel is best for us - not what WE feel is best for us.

A great example of this is the Lisbon Treaty. Before this Treaty there were proposals for a European Constitution and when that was rejected the Lisbon Treaty was proposed.

Labour promised in its last manifesto that it would have a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty - it doesn't seem to have kept this promise because Parliament has already ratified the Treaty. I don't know about you - but this is not acceptable to me!

Libertas is very much in favour of the EU and we want the EU to go from strength to strength. But if it keeps on going the way that it is it will not go from strength to strength - especially if its citizens are being repeatedly ingored.

Voting for Libertas now will help hugely to address the issue of Democracy in Europe.
